Dublin's Doughnut Craze

You'll have to have been living in a bubble to not notice the city has a love affair with doughnuts going on at the moment.

It's the treat de jour, preceded by cupcakes and cronuts (of which there are still delightfully available from The Cupcake Bloke and The Marker Hotel respectively).

Of course, Rolling Doughnut on O'Connell Street has been a Dublin institute for years. There are few who haven't tasted their hot, sugared and chocolate covered offerings at some point. As a teenager, few of my Saturday trips to town were complete without a visit to their stand to get a few of each.

The opening of their snazzier, more polished shop on Bachelor's Walk has done nothing to diminish demand and their creative offerings have had people flocking.

Aungier Danger helped sweep along the crest of crumbs for Instagram worthy doughnuts. These are packed full of sugar, so they're not for the fainthearted. Expect a Que.

But lately, the ones that have been getting me going are from a little tucked away place beside Pearse Dart Station. Enter Offbeat Doughnuts.

The packaging they come in is super pretty, all neon pink and cutesy drawings. But what's inside is even better.

I got Oreo, Nutella, Apple Pie, Caramel, Chocolate Creme and Sprinkles for our dart journey home. We showed exceptional self-control in not devouring them all on the way.

I have to say, these are my current favourites of all the douhgnut offerings so far (although I've yet to try Rolling Douhnuts grown up flavours). Beautifully finished, the pastry was light and airy and the sweet toppings were well balanced and not overwhelming.

In particular, the Oreo one was heaven in a ball. Perfect with a large espresso. This was actually my second visit to Offbeat, the first time their doughnuts had sold out early in the day. But it was definitely worth the wait. I'm declaring it's a must visit.

Xoxo
